My Parents will disown me . . .

. . . if I adopt outside of my “race“. I have heard this many times in some form. I even thought it myself before we brought Josiah home. Well, the little man is a year old now.  My parents haven’t disowned me, but our relationship is certainly strained & different. we have been virtually disowned by other members of our extended family & some of my long time friends have misunderstood. But, rather than regret, I am overwhelmed by love &  gratitude that this little fellow is our son — and for the way that God displayed His love, His mercy, &  His power yet again in our lives through adding this particular arrow to our quiver.

If you have considered adoption and the painful thought that “my parents would disown me” has been hindering you. The following might be helpful :
I found this short video by Russel Moore on Jason Kovacs’ Abba Fund Blog .

  1. Transcultural marriage is aptly described as difficult and racial lines are often cultural ones as well, but if you have the opportunity to *raise* a child and therefore supply his culture, especially from a very early age, what difference does his ancestry make? Or color? In fact, whatwith this post-Christendom(and therefore post-Gal. 3:28 and post-Mat. 6:9) society, it would seem a positive *good* to have different colors/cultures interacting under the banner of the Gospel in both church and home.

I recall having yet another mini-epiphany while listening to Rushdoony talk about how as our society departs from Christ, racism, nationalism, etc. again become problems. Time to take a stand against remaining cultural corruption!

In my one visit to New Albany, we sat behind a family with a little colored girl and noticed a few more scattered throughout the congregation that evening; she and Josiah(whom I’ve never seen pictured in a non-photogenic moment) are *beautiful* children! Christian upbringing seems to impart such a spiritual/ethical culture to children that it just makes them glow.. We’re Christian first… O’, Lord open the eyes which don’t see and celebrate this!
